Developmental editing
If you are looking for a high-level edit of your manuscript—almost a second eye over your story from someone familiar with the conventions of a novel—a developmental edit is the appropriate choice. This edit allows you to receive feedback on elements such as character development, setting, plot, pace, etc.
What this includes:Two passes of your manuscript—one from the perspective of a reader, the other as a developmental editor.
Chapter-by-chapter edit notes, flagging any potential story errors or more specific areas of improvement.
A comprehensive editorial report covering plot, pace, tone, character development, and more.
What this doesn’t include:
Specific line edits or rewrites.
Notes and comments on spelling and grammar (although may indicate instances of repetition of grammatical errors).
Copy-editing
Are you wanting someone to fact-check your story? To point out ways to improve the readability of your story at a line level? To help correct any spelling and grammar so that your manuscript is perfectly presented? A copy-edit is a great option to take if you are needing more of a polish of your story.
What this includes:Fact-checking of places, names, dates, etc, to ensure that your story is accurate.
Editing suggestions at a line level for readability.
Tracked changes to help you correct spelling and grammar.
What this doesn't include: High-level edits on key story elements, such as plot, pace, setting, etc.
Feedback on ways to improve the narrative itself.
Proofreading
Once a novel has been typeset, a proofread is conducted to ensure that no errors have occurred between copy and design. This is a final check that is completed before printing.
What this includes:Final check of spelling, grammar, and punctuation in PDF form.
Marked-up pages with notes and comments for easy changes.
Flagging of any formatting or design errors.
What this doesn't include: Line edits or suggested changes for readability.
High-level notes on key elements of the narrative, such as plot, pace, tone, etc.
